Chlorine Dioxide Generators
Chlorine Dioxide (CIO2) gas is a highly effective disinfectant when dissolved in water. As a gas it appears as a dark yellow colour and is generated on site by specialist equipment.
Chlorine dioxide generators are often used to generate chlorine dioxide for the disinfection of water in applications where the pH of the water varies because chlorine dioxide is effective as a disinfectant across a wide range of pH values, unlike other chlorine compounds such as sodium hypochlorite.
Additionally, whereas chlorine and other related compounds form disinfection by-products, such as THMs (Trihalomethane), when they react with inorganic or organic matter. Due to its differing reaction chemistry Chlorine dioxide is a safer option as it does not produce such by-products. This safety aspect is another reason for its widespread use in the disinfection of water used in relation to human consumption, i.e. the food and beverage industry.

Chlorine Dioxide Generators

Chlorine dioxide is, quite simply, a more powerful oxidising agent than chlorine in every way. It works better as a disinfectant and has the advantage of also breaking down odours.
Analysis has shown that chlorine dioxide is capable of deactivating viruses and other pathogens that are not affected by chlorine. It is also more effective in proportion to concentration level. If a concentration of chlorine dioxide is compared to the exact same concentration of chlorine, the chlorine dioxide will work harder, destroying more spores and viruses.
Another advantage of chlorine dioxide is that it eliminates the formation and spread of trihalomethanes, also called haloforms, which are dangerous pathogens.
A further reason to use chlorine dioxide to treat drinking water is that it oxidises phenols, algae and the products of their decomposition, making them taste neutral.
Typical Applications
- Potable water, particularly in complex water systems and for preventing and eliminating legionella
- Water in beverage industry, breweries and food industry
- Cooling water
- Wastewater
